From 21st until 25th March, 1915, and then again from 29th March to 3rd April, the 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 6 Brigade, 2nd Division were in the trenches at Cuinchy near La Bassée. William Beevor died from wounds on 31st March after having been sent to a base hospital on the coast, but as yet there is no information as to when and where he was wounded. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
